Why Anusara?

John Friend founded Anusara in 1997. Anusara is a dynamic process that emphasizes the Tantric philosophy of intrinsic goodness. Anusara is heart-centered and emphasizes the Universal Principles of Alignment. Each class begins with a time to center through the chanting of the Anusara invocation.  To learn more about Anusara please visit http://anusara.com

What is Hatha Yoga?

Hatha is a Sanskrit word meaning the union of sun (Ha) and moon (tha). Yoga is the union of our true nature through the body, heart, and mind. All contemporary physical manifestations of yoga through movement are a form of Hatha yoga. There are many forms of Hatha Yoga. Some of the most prevalent and well-known schools of Hatha yoga are Anusara, Sivananda, Asthanga, Iyengar, Jivamukti, Vinyasa flow and Bikram. All of these practices are based in part from the teachings of the late Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (1888-1989), and yes, he was 101 years old. The series of poses associated with Hatha yoga are called Asanas. All of the asanas have Sanskrit and corresponding English names. There are hundreds of Asanas however a core of more common and effective asanas are practiced regularly throughout all of the schools of Hatha Yoga. In addition to asana, modern Hatha yoga also includes Pranayama (breath control), and Meditation.

Anusara Yoga Opening Invocation

OM Namah Shivaya Gurave

I offer myself to the light, the Auspicious One, Who is the true Teacher within and without,

Saccidananda Murtaye

Who assumes the form of Reality, Consciousness, and Bliss,

Nisprapancaya Shantaya

Always present and full of peace,

Niralmbaya Tejase

The essence inside is completely free, And sparkles with a divine luster.

OM
